Dimple Forming

Dimple Forming involves pressing the edge of the hole between dimple dies to form a beveled/flared edge.

It is part of our in-house services, and can be completed within our fast 2-3 day lead time.

Common Applications

  • Strengthening: Dimples can stiffen thin parts, allowing for increased strength while reducing overall weight.

  • Weight Reduction: Material can be strategically removed by adding dimples, all while maintaining the part's strength.

  • Tread Plate: Small, protruding dimples create an effective anti-slip surface.

  • Cosmetics: Dimples can be used for aesthetic purposes.

Materials

Our stock dies are rated to handle:

  • 5052-H32 Aluminum (thickness up to 0.13” | 3.302mm)

  • Cold Rolled Steel (thickness up to 0.13” | 3.302mm)

  • Galvanneal (thickness up to 0.13” | 3.302mm)

  • 304 Stainless Steel (thickness up to 0.094” | 2.388mm)


Finishes

Parts with no finish may show minor tool marks, cosmetic bare metal finishes will be touched up where possible.


Tolerances

  • We only guarantee tolerances on a few key dimensions:

    • Major Diameter: ±0.040“ | ±1.016mm

    • Minor Diameter: ±0.040” | ±1.016mm

    • Height: ±0.040“ | ±1.016mm

  • The formed feature geometry in the models is approximate showing the key dimensions.

  • The sides are not exactly conical and will have a slight curvature.

  • 0.5" Dimple: 0.61” | 15.494mm

  • 1" Dimple: 1.00“ | 25.4mm

  • 1.5" Dimple: 1.44” | 36.576mm

  • 2" Dimple: 1.86“ | 47.244mm

  • 2.5" Dimple: 2.30” | 58.42mm

Maximum Center-To-Closest-Edge: 24“ | 609.6mm

Minimum Edge-Of-Hole to Major Diameter

  • 2x material thickness

  • Maximum hole diameter = 0.375” | 9.525mm (use minimum center to edge for larger holes)
